Our Charity of the Month for April is The Leprosy Mission – an international Christian charity working towards the eradication of the causes and consequences of leprosy. Founded 145 years ago, it is active in over 50 countries around the world.
The Leprosy Mission logo represents Jesus and the man with leprosy who knelt at Jesus’ feet asking to be healed – and Jesus healed him (Mark 1:40-42). It deeply expresses the heart’s desire of The Leprosy Mission’s Founder, Wellesley Bailey, who wrote “I felt if ever there was a Christ-like work in this world it was to go among these poor sufferers and bring to them the consolation of the Gospel”.
Therefore, following Jesus Christ, The Leprosy Mission strives to break the chains of leprosy, empowering people to attain healing, dignity, and life in all its fullness. They work in the areas of prevention assistance (fresh water, sanitation and education), diagnosis and treatment (including Multi Drug Therapy, that can cure a patient in 6-12 months, and counselling), and after care and self help (to help prevent or deal with the effects of permanent disabilities). They also work with communities, educating them that leprosy is curable, thereby combatting the stigma that often attaches to the condition.
